Birdsong (1993)

Author: Sebastian Faulks

They say that good things can leave you speechless. Well... this is one of them. How to write about a book that is so good that you can't even find appropriate words to describe it's greatness?  Of course, as you know, nothing in this world is perfect; however, some is quite close to perfection.

Prior to reading this book, I've never heard about Sebastian Faulks before, and that's why I was so intrigued to find out what this noted author is all about. Frankly speaking, I was very happy to make this acquaintance, as I'm now very much looking forward to reading another work by Mr. Faulks. But now let's get back to business and talk about "Birdsong". I guess, you may not call it a typical novel, and I wasn't in love with it at first, but in the course of time, I've grown to like it a lot. The story could be divided into 3 parts where the actions take place - before the World War I, during the war and in the late 70s. These three periods are completely different in their atmosphere and the emotional experiences of the characters.

Stephen Wraysford, a passionate young Englishman, is sent to France to find out more about RenĂ© Azaire and his textile factory. This journey was meant to be businesslike, but came out be full of lust, love and drama, as Mrs. Azaire agrees to start a love affair. This move changes their future completely. Stephen  joins the army and experiences all the horrors of war. Cold, wet and gloomy trenches full with blood and dead bodies. There, Stephen meets Jack Firebrace, a man who is homesick and sick of this pointless war. Unfriendly towards each other at first, they both bond when their lives hang by a thread. After 60 years since the end of the WWI, we are again thrown back the beginning of the 20th century, as Elizabeth, Stephen's granddaughter, is eager to learn something more about her grandfather, his life, love, heroic deeds and the promise made that shall be fulfilled.

Only after finishing reading this book, have I understood it's real value.

If history is your passion, if love is what you aim for, and if true and deep emotions are what you desire, then read, definitely read this novel.
